Iran-India Meeting Highlights ‘Historic’ Tech and Innovation Partnership

Date:

On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian engaged in discussions that underscored the “long-standing” and “historic” ties between their two nations. Highlighting the significance of the relationship, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, emphasized Tehran’s dedication to its partnership with New Delhi, particularly in the areas of trade and economic cooperation.

A key topic of conversation during the meeting was the Chabahar Port, a vital hub for Indo-Iranian collaboration. The leaders also addressed several pressing regional issues, sharing perspectives on how to advance peace and stability. India reiterated its commitment to bolstering its multifaceted relationship with Iran, with both Modi and Pezeshkian agreeing on the importance of ongoing diplomatic efforts for regional peace.

While the meeting reflected mutual interests, it also attracted international attention, especially from the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the discussions, acknowledging that countries have the autonomy to guide their foreign policies. However, he cautioned against any actions that might facilitate Iran in circumventing U.S. sanctions.

The dialogue between Modi and Pezeshkian signifies a continuous effort to strengthen ties despite geopolitical complexities. The focus on economic and strategic cooperation, alongside shared views on regional developments, underscores the depth of the Indo-Iranian relationship. Both countries appear committed to navigating challenges while pursuing common goals in their bilateral engagements.
