India’s Youth Party Accuses Modi Government Amid Delhi Protests Over Voter List Controversy

Date:

Amid ongoing protests in Delhi, leaders of the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) have accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of stifling democratic dissent and fostering a climate of fear. The protests, now in their second day, revolve around demands for the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whom demonstrators accuse of orchestrating a voter-list revision that allegedly removed 130 million names, potentially disenfranchising minority groups and benefiting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Authorities have responded with extensive security measures, including police barricades and restrictions on public transport and internet services. Thousands of demonstrators have been detained to prevent gatherings at protest sites. On Saturday, CJP leaders Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were among those detained but were released on Sunday with conditions aimed at preventing public disorder.

Despite the crackdown, protestors, including students and civil society activists, have vowed to continue their demonstrations. Student activist Neha Bora, detained again on Sunday, claimed that protestors faced abusive treatment and overcrowded conditions. Another protester, Surbi Yadav from Delhi University, accused the police of using excessive force during her detention and pledged to persist in the protests until their demands are met.

At a recent press conference, CJP leaders Das and Ranka expanded their criticism beyond Kumar’s role, targeting Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Das accused the government of using force to protect political interests, asserting that the demonstrations will persist despite the government’s response. The BJP, however, has dismissed allegations of electoral manipulation and defended the voter-list revision as a legitimate process to eliminate ineligible voters.

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has echoed calls for accountability regarding the voter-list revision, intensifying scrutiny on the ruling party. He accused the government of electoral misconduct, adding pressure to the BJP amid growing concerns about electoral transparency.

The protests underscore rising political tensions in India over issues of electoral integrity, civil liberties, and the management of public dissent. As demonstrators remain resolute in applying pressure on the government, authorities continue to focus on preventing further unrest in the capital.
