Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies to be held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across the state from October 13 to October 31. These rallies aim to counter what the BJP perceives as attempts by the Congress party to undermine democratic institutions. The announcement was made in Guwahati, where Sarma emphasized the need to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bolster public trust in constitutional entities.
Sarma accused Congress and other opposition parties of using institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court for political gains. He criticized Congress’s stance against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that it is crucial for addressing issues related to voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam.
The BJP’s planned rallies will take place at district headquarters, focusing on reinforcing democratic values and opposing Congress’s approach to electoral and constitutional issues. The rallies come amid ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress, particularly over electoral processes and the independence of institutions in Assam.
Sarma also took the opportunity to target Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of employing double standards concerning election outcomes based on the winning party. He criticized Gandhi’s actions related to the Supreme Court, stressing that political pressures should not influence constitutional institutions.
This development highlights the growing political friction in Assam, with the BJP positioning itself as a defender of democratic institutions while questioning Congress’s motives and actions in the state’s political landscape.
