India, currently at the helm of the BRICS chairmanship, is gearing up to host the annual summit this September. A key development is the confirmed attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is set to participate in the summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. This information was disclosed by Yury Ushakov, a Kremlin aide for international affairs.
On the sidelines of the summit, an important bilateral meeting is anticipated between President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This engagement underscores the strategic dialogues taking place within the BRICS framework, which represents a coalition of major emerging economies.
President Putin’s upcoming visit marks his return to India following his last trip in December 2025, where he participated in the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. His presence at the BRICS summit highlights the ongoing collaboration and dialogue among member nations.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was present in New Delhi for a two-day conclave of BRICS member states, indicating sustained diplomatic engagement ahead of the main summit. The BRICS bloc, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has seen significant expansion in recent years.
Since 2024, BRICS has welcomed new members, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025. This expansion has solidified BRICS as a pivotal global platform, collectively representing nearly 49.5% of the world’s population, approximately 40% of global GDP, and around 26% of global trade. The upcoming summit in New Delhi is poised to further the bloc’s influence and cooperative efforts on the global stage.
