Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the imminent launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service on the Yamuna River, planned for just before the Chhath Puja festivities from November 13 to 16. This new initiative aims to enhance the cultural and recreational experience for those celebrating the festival, as well as offer a new leisure activity for residents and visitors.
The ferry service, covering a route between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, will offer a one-hour cruise along approximately five kilometers of the river. Passengers will be treated to scenic views of the riverbanks, including traditional ghats and the natural landscape. The Delhi government has priced the tickets at around ₹500 per person.
Gupta recently conducted an inspection of the ferry at the Sonia Vihar Sports Club and visited Sur Ghat, a key location for the Chhath Puja celebrations. Efforts are underway to develop this area into a picnic spot, giving families a place to gather, enjoy the riverside environment, and perform prayers to the Yamuna.
The “Namo Yamuna” service was initially slated for a February 20 launch but faced delays due to incomplete project work. The ferry infrastructure includes facilities like boarding areas, ticket counters, and waiting zones, ensuring a smooth experience for passengers.
The vessel, known as Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai-based company. The 40-foot catamaran-style boat is specifically designed to navigate the shallow parts of the Yamuna, providing stability and safety for its passengers.
