During his visit, Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, delivering condolences on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju paid tribute to the late Father Amir, describing him as a visionary leader who significantly contributed to Qatar’s development and to the enhancement of relations between India and Qatar. He emphasized that the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns the loss and holds the late leader’s contributions in high regard.
Prime Minister Modi had previously honored the memory of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, recognizing him as a true friend of India and acknowledging his pivotal role in strengthening bilateral ties. In a gesture of respect and solidarity, India observed a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026, with national flags at half-mast and suspension of official entertainment activities.
