India has underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability along its border with China to foster the development of bilateral relations. This emphasis came during a meeting between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The meeting was part of the 25th round of discussions between the special representatives of the two nations, addressing their long-standing boundary dispute. The dialogue aimed at advancing the delimitation of the boundary, enhancing border management, and expanding collaborative efforts across the frontier.
Both countries reviewed the progress made in their bilateral relations positively and explored strategies to uphold stability along the Line of Actual Control. They reiterated their commitment to pursuing a political resolution to the boundary issue, guided by their long-term strategic interests. These talks build on the progress following the 2024 understanding between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which sought to de-escalate tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since this understanding, initiatives such as people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade via designated routes have been revived.
Ajit Doval highlighted that the normalization of bilateral ties hinges on maintaining peace along the border. In response, China expressed that the boundary matter should be contextualized appropriately within the broader spectrum of their relationship. While specifics on the demarcation of the disputed boundary were not disclosed, both sides agreed to continue negotiations. The next round of special representative talks is scheduled to occur in India in 2027.
The discussions gain additional importance as they precede the anticipated visit of Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This upcoming visit adds urgency to the diplomatic efforts aimed at further stabilizing the relationship between the two Asian giants. Both nations appear committed to advancing their dialogue, seeking to balance their boundary issues with broader bilateral cooperation.
