In a move set to enhance global cooperation and reform international institutions, India has teamed up with the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Barbados, and Kenya to launch the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) platform. Announced during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, this initiative aims to address pressing global challenges through strengthened multilateral efforts.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the necessity for robust multilateral cooperation due to prevailing geopolitical tensions and conflicts. He emphasized the need for more inclusive and transparent decision-making processes within international bodies to effectively tackle issues like climate change, international security, and pandemic preparedness.
The P4M declaration calls for a reformation of the multilateral system to enhance its effectiveness, inclusivity, and representation. The participating nations have expressed their commitment to collaborate on sustainable development, fair trade, global finance, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital transformation. These efforts aim to create a more stable and resilient global order.
To facilitate these ambitions, the member countries plan to establish a coordination mechanism and identify key areas for collective action. This platform remains open to additional countries interested in fostering multilateral cooperation, signaling a broader scope for international collaboration.
Jaishankar highlighted the importance of addressing development finance, resilient supply chains, and counterterrorism through international cooperation, pointing to these areas as critical for ensuring global stability and security. The P4M initiative represents a significant step toward reforming global institutions to better meet contemporary challenges.
