India-New Zealand FTA Boosts Tech Trade; EU, Canada, Chile Talks Progress

Date:

Indian exporters are set to see a significant boost as the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand takes effect on October 20, allowing for duty-free access to the New Zealand market for all Indian goods. This development promises to enhance trade flows and economic ties between the two nations, offering a notable opportunity for Indian businesses to expand their reach.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced this milestone, highlighting the agreement’s comprehensive scope. The FTA, signed in April, not only establishes a zero-tariff corridor for Indian exports but also paves the way for $20 billion in investment from New Zealand into India over the next 15 years. This investment is expected to foster economic growth and create jobs, further strengthening bilateral relations.

While the agreement opens up significant new opportunities, India has strategically excluded several sensitive agricultural products from the deal, including onions, chickpeas, peas, corn, almonds, and sugar. This move aims to protect domestic farmers and safeguard India’s agricultural sector from potential market disruptions.

The FTA with New Zealand is part of India’s broader strategy to enhance its global trade partnerships. Minister Goyal noted that negotiations are accelerating with other key partners, including the European Union, Canada, and Chile. The India-Canada discussions are set to enter their fifth round in October, with both countries working towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. Progress with Chile is also on the cards, while significant advancements are anticipated in the EU trade agreement talks by year-end.

These efforts reflect India’s proactive approach to strengthening its position in the global marketplace. As the FTA with New Zealand takes hold, businesses and economies in both countries stand to benefit, underscoring the importance of strategic international trade agreements in today’s interconnected world.
