India and Denmark are poised to deepen their strategic partnership with a renewed focus on green energy, trade, and maritime development. During a visit to Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2–3, Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard engaged with Indian government officials and business leaders to explore avenues for economic collaboration. His discussions underlined Denmark’s interest in supporting India’s transition towards renewable energy and sustainable development.
The visit marked preparations for the next phase of the Green Strategic Partnership between the two nations, initially established in 2020. A new joint action plan is being devised to bolster cooperation in sectors that promise mutual economic and environmental benefits.
In Mumbai, Minister Lidegaard toured APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping conglomerate Maersk, and explored investment opportunities with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. Meanwhile, in New Delhi, talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal focused on enhancing bilateral trade and economic ties, particularly in the context of the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement.
Sustainable maritime development also featured prominently in the discussions. Meetings with Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal revolved around fostering environmentally friendly shipping practices, modernizing port infrastructure, and developing green maritime corridors.
Renewable energy cooperation emerged as a critical theme, with discussions involving Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi. The talks concentrated on improving energy efficiency and bolstering clean energy infrastructure to support India’s shift towards a sustainable power system. Denmark’s contributions to the International Solar Alliance underscore its commitment to collaborating on solar energy initiatives.
Currently, over 200 Danish companies operate in India, collectively employing more than 100,000 people across various sectors. Strengthening this partnership is anticipated to open new avenues for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development, further cementing the economic ties between India and Denmark.
