Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia soon, a move anticipated to solidify India’s strategic, economic, and maritime ties with one of its pivotal Indo-Pacific allies. India and Indonesia, both prominent democracies in the Indo-Pacific region and members of the G20, are poised to enhance cooperation in diverse sectors such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defense, and maritime security. This visit follows Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s journey to India in January 2025, during which the two nations celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations and inked agreements on health, digital collaboration, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.
Despite their robust historical connections and shared aspirations, bilateral trade between India and Indonesia currently hovers around $30 billion. Both countries are eager to tap into greater economic potential. India is particularly interested in boosting its investment in Indonesia, focusing on critical areas like minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security.
Digital collaboration is anticipated to be a central theme of Modi’s visit, with Indonesia expressing an interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce strategies. The two countries are also exploring partnerships in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses, which could lead to significant advancements in their digital economies.
Maritime security stands out as another priority, with plans to enhance cooperation in the strategic Strait of Malacca, bolster naval collaboration, improve maritime domain awareness, and expand defense-industrial partnerships. As Indonesia seeks to diversify its defense suppliers, new opportunities may arise for India’s defense sector to play a more significant role.
The visit is also expected to encourage deeper people-to-people connections through enhanced academic, business, and cultural partnerships. This focus on fostering greater exchanges aims to build a more comprehensive and lasting relationship between the two nations, further strengthening their ties in the region.
