Amit Shah, India’s Union Home Minister, has laid out an ambitious plan for a drug-free India by 2029 with the introduction of the roadmap for Nasha Mukt Bharat. The initiative aims to eradicate the trafficking of narcotics across India’s borders, focusing on reducing the supply of drugs, cutting demand, and minimizing the associated harms. Since 2019, the government has spearheaded a unified national effort to dismantle drug networks, Shah emphasized during his announcement.
Key strategies in this roadmap include the establishment of the four-tier NCORD mechanism, Anti-Narcotics Task Forces across all states and Union Territories, and the launch of a national rehabilitation helpline. Additionally, the NIDAN database has been created to track narcotics offenders, complemented by data-driven mapping of drug networks and hotspots to efficiently tackle the drug menace.
Highlighting the efforts of enforcement agencies, Shah reported the seizure of over 29,968 kilograms of synthetic drugs, valued at over ₹19,600 crore, between 2020 and July 2026. During the period from 2019 to July 2026, the total confiscation of narcotic and psychotropic substances surpassed 93.34 lakh kilograms, showcasing the scale of the government’s crackdown on drug-related activities.
In a bid to disrupt the financial underpinnings of drug trafficking, authorities have also seized properties worth ₹1,841 crore in 3,016 cases between 2024 and June 2026. These efforts target both the narcotics and the intricate financial networks that support them, further intensifying the government’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes.
Shah’s announcement took place during his official visit to Goa, where he was also scheduled to assess the state’s security preparedness. However, he had to cut his visit short and return to Delhi after completing the review.
