Delhi Metro’s Tech-Driven Operations Handle Record 82.4 Lakh Amid Bus Strike

Date:

The ongoing strike by private agency drivers linked to the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has significantly impacted daily commutes, forcing a surge in the use of the Delhi Metro. On September 17, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported a record-breaking 8,244,903 passenger boardings, underscoring the metro system’s critical role as a transport lifeline during citywide disruptions.

As the strike reached its fourth day, the absence of thousands of buses put immense pressure on alternative public transportation methods, with the Delhi Metro absorbing much of the demand. In response to the increased commuter load, the DMRC implemented measures to maintain service efficiency. This included the operation of 20 additional train trips and the deployment of eight extra trains, particularly during peak travel hours.

Efforts to manage the unprecedented passenger volume extended to security and crowd control within metro stations. Both the DMRC and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) intensified their operations to ensure smooth passenger movement and maintain safety, reflecting the metro’s adaptability in crisis scenarios.

This record footfall not only highlights the Delhi Metro’s capacity to accommodate sudden spikes in ridership but also reinforces its status as an indispensable component of the region’s public transport infrastructure. With the bus strike leaving many commuters seeking alternatives, the metro’s robust response played a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of the strike on daily travel across Delhi-NCR.
