Call for Action on Delayed Electric Furnace Innovation at Tata Steel

Date:

Trade unions are urging the UK government to expedite a crucial electricity grid connection for Tata Steel amid reports of potential delays to the company’s new electric arc furnace project at Port Talbot. This development is key to Tata Steel’s shift towards more sustainable steel production at its facility in south Wales. With the closure of its blast furnaces in 2024, the new electric arc furnace is set to play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions from the steelmaking process.

The grid connection has hit several roadblocks, with National Grid pointing to challenges such as unsuitable ground conditions, planning requirements, and environmental concerns. Initially expected to face delays of six to eight months, the project could potentially be postponed by up to a year. These setbacks have sparked anxiety among unions representing steelworkers, who stress that jobs, local economies, and the future success of the Port Talbot transformation hinge on the timely completion of the furnace.

Community Union, Unite the Union, and GMB Union have collectively called for government intervention to address these issues, aiming to allay uncertainties affecting workers and the broader community. The delay coincides with a recent fire that damaged a portion of the remaining steel-processing operations at Port Talbot, adding to the operational difficulties faced by Tata Steel’s UK division.

The UK government has committed £500 million to support the new electric arc furnace, which is projected to produce up to three million tonnes of steel annually while reducing emissions. The facility was initially slated to commence operations by late 2027. In response to the delay, Tata Steel is collaborating with National Grid and government representatives to consider options for speeding up the connection process, including exploring temporary power solutions and adjusting construction timelines.

National Grid has assured that construction is underway and remains dedicated to delivering the connection as swiftly and safely as possible, despite the complex engineering, planning, and environmental challenges involved. Tata Steel continues to engage with relevant parties to ensure the successful realization of its ambitious green steel production goals.
