India-Canada Trade Surges, Setting Stage for Modi’s December Visit

Date:

Trade between India and Canada has experienced significant growth in the first eight months of 2026, marking a positive trend ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Canada in December. Canada’s merchandise exports to India surged by 36.7%, reaching CA$3.03 billion, driven primarily by metals and minerals, which constituted 41% of the shipments, and agri-food products at 16.9%.

On the other hand, Canada’s imports from India totaled CA$7.05 billion, reflecting a 10.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. In 2025, Canadian exports to India were valued at CA$3.9 billion, while imports from India stood at CA$9.7 billion, indicating a steady growth in bilateral trade relations.

The growth in trade has been supported by high-level discussions and business initiatives, including a Canadian trade delegation consisting of nearly 300 participants. This delegation secured 34 commercial agreements valued at approximately CA$300 million, covering sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.

Further strengthening economic ties, India and Canada are working towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), having completed five rounds of negotiations. Both nations are eager to advance these discussions with the aim of finalizing the agreement by December, coinciding with Modi’s visit.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, have engaged in talks to enhance bilateral relations. Officials from both countries continue their efforts to expand trade, investment, and cooperation across various areas, including mobility, reflecting a concerted push to deepen economic linkages.
