Ireland Highlights Tech Ties, Pursues EU-India Free Trade Pact by Year-End

Date:

The European Union (EU) has underscored the significance of its strategic partnership with India, emphasizing enhanced collaboration in sectors such as trade, technology, security, and connectivity. This relationship is set to reach a new milestone with the anticipated signing of a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end, marking a significant advancement in EU-India relations.

Kevin Kelly, the Irish Ambassador, highlighted the breadth of the EU’s partnership with India at the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. He noted that this partnership transcends trade, extending into vital areas like technology, research, climate action, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation. The strengthening of these ties is part of a mutual effort to tackle global challenges and foster sustainable economic growth.

With negotiations concluded, the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement is poised for formal signing by December, potentially taking effect early next year. This agreement is part of a broader expansion of cooperation between the two entities in critical areas, including defense, security, and emerging technologies, as they navigate the evolving global economic and geopolitical landscape.

EU Ambassador Herve Delphin remarked on the mutual adaptation of Europe and India to a changing global environment, emphasizing their pursuit of greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships. He also highlighted the crucial need to safeguard freedom of navigation and secure global trade routes, advocating for increased India-EU collaboration on maritime security and regional stability.
