India is advancing its efforts to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, with Moscow having submitted a cost proposal to initiate discussions with New Delhi. The final decision on this acquisition will be made by the Cabinet Committee on Security once the price negotiations are complete and clearance is received from the Finance Ministry. The initial contract for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is on track to be fulfilled with the delivery of the last system expected in November 2026.
The proposed expansion of India’s S-400 fleet aims to bolster its air defense capabilities, particularly along the eastern sector that borders China. The S-400 system demonstrated its effectiveness during India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025, further reinforcing the argument for acquiring additional units. This move is seen as a strategic enhancement to India’s defense posture in the region.
Concurrently, India has yet to make a decision regarding the acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Despite showing interest in the Russian offer, the Indian Air Force has not committed, especially in light of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet. The deliberation over these advanced fighter jets remains ongoing as part of India’s broader defense strategy.
The acquisition of the S-400 systems is expected to be a significant topic in the broader defense discussions between India and Russia. This dialogue is likely to further develop during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to India for the BRICS summit in September.
