In a significant shift within Google’s AI research unit, Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive of Google DeepMind. Having co-founded DeepMind in 2010, Hassabis will transition to the position of chair and assume a new role as chief scientist at Alphabet, the parent company of Google. This move allows him to step away from daily operations to dedicate more attention to long-term AI research and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current chief technology officer of DeepMind, will succeed Hassabis as the head of the organization, taking the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis stated that this leadership transition would enable him to concentrate more fully on the broader development of advanced AI technologies, ensuring they benefit humanity. In addition to his new roles, Hassabis will continue as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a company focused on drug discovery that originated from DeepMind.
These leadership changes coincide with the departure of several senior AI engineers from Google. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to establish a new startup named Discovery Loop, which will focus on machine learning, science, and engineering research. This development comes amidst increasing competition in the AI sector, with Google facing challenges from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which have made notable strides in AI models and coding technologies.
The restructuring and departures mark a pivotal moment for Google’s AI division as it aims to bolster its positioning in the fast-evolving race towards advanced artificial intelligence. As the industry landscape becomes increasingly competitive, these changes reflect a strategic effort by Google to maintain its leadership in the field.
