In a significant shift within Google’s AI research unit, Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive of Google DeepMind. Having co-founded DeepMind in 2010, Hassabis will transition to the position of chair and assume a new role as chief scientist at Alphabet, the parent company of Google. Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current chief technology officer of DeepMind, will succeed Hassabis as the head of the organization, taking the title of senior vice-president. In addition to his new roles, Hassabis will continue as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a company focused on drug discovery that originated from DeepMind.

Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to establish a new startup named Discovery Loop, which will focus on machine learning, science, and engineering research.
