Tech Compliance: Meta Global Heads Summoned Over PM Modi Reel Removal

Date:

The Union government has called upon the global leadership of Meta to address several compliance issues, including the temporary removal of a Facebook Reel featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This meeting, organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), underscores the government’s concerns regarding Meta’s adherence to India’s digital regulations. A critical point of discussion will be how the Prime Minister’s official content was mistakenly taken down despite the sophisticated content moderation systems employed by the platform.

Meta responded by reinstating the Reel on the same day, admitting that its removal was an error. The company also reportedly offered an apology to the government. The video in question tackled issues surrounding the NEET-UG paper leak, proposing solutions such as the establishment of fast-track courts and the imposition of stricter penalties to prevent future exam paper leaks.

Another significant topic on the agenda is Instagram’s management of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and related advertisements, following recent directives to eliminate such content. The government intends to delve into these concerns to ensure that the platform aligns with national standards for handling sensitive material.

The meeting will also address concerns over WhatsApp’s proposed username feature. Authorities have voiced apprehensions that this feature could elevate the risk of impersonation, phishing, identity theft, and online fraud. As a precautionary measure, the government has requested WhatsApp to suspend the rollout of this feature until further consultations have taken place.

In addition, officials are likely to emphasize the imperative for Meta to comply more stringently with India’s IT Rules, specifically in areas concerning AI-generated content, public order, and platform accountability. The discussions aim to ensure that Meta’s platforms operate in harmony with India’s regulatory framework, safeguarding users and maintaining order in the digital space.
