India and Poland have committed to enhancing their cooperation in key strategic sectors, including defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This decision emerged from discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who also explored avenues to double bilateral trade by 2030 from the current $6.3 billion.
The leaders emphasized the potential for joint development and production in areas such as defence equipment and space technology. They also addressed collaboration in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Modi extended an invitation for Polish companies to engage in co-development and co-production with India, while Tusk highlighted the need to diversify access to critical minerals to bolster economic security.
In a bid to further solidify ties, both nations are planning to establish a bilateral startup bridge and develop partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. A delegation comprising nearly 100 Polish companies is currently exploring business opportunities in sectors like defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, and mining.
Defence cooperation is a significant focus, with India and Poland working towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information. This aims to facilitate closer defence-industrial collaboration. The countries have agreed to initiate a defence industry dialogue and counterterrorism dialogue, exploring joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies.
Their discussions also touched on broader international issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Modi reiterated India’s support for diplomatic efforts toward peace, and Polish officials welcomed India’s calls for a negotiated solution. The historical people-to-people connections between the two nations were also noted, recalling Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and India’s support to Polish refugees during World War II.
The meeting between the two leaders underscores a mutual intent to deepen strategic cooperation, enhance trade, and build resilient supply chains, marking a significant step in strengthening India-Poland relations.
