Nana Patekar Passes at 75: A Bollywood Icon’s Legacy

Date:

Veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, renowned for his intense and unconventional performances, passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. Patekar’s career, spanning nearly five decades, significantly reshaped the concept of a Bollywood hero by emphasizing character depth and emotional authenticity.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he began his film journey with the 1978 Hindi film “Gaman” before gaining recognition with “Aaj Ki Awaz” in 1984. His role in “Ankush” in 1986 solidified his reputation for portraying emotionally intense characters. Patekar earned widespread acclaim for his performance in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” and won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for “Parinda.” His evolution from supporting roles to leading performances was marked by films like “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor.

Patekar also ventured into filmmaking, making his directorial debut with “Prahaar” in 1991, where he portrayed a former army officer. The film later garnered a dedicated following. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he demonstrated versatility by alternating between lead and supporting roles, making it difficult to categorize his diverse body of work.

Beyond serious dramas and action films, Patekar showed his comedic prowess in the 2007 film “Welcome,” where his portrayal of Uday Shetty was well-received. His filmography includes notable works like “Bluffmaster!,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Ab Tak Chhappan,” “Rajneeti,” and the Marathi film “Natsamrat.”

Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta renewed allegations of sexual harassment against him related to the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the allegations, and the Mumbai police later filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. This incident became part of the broader discourse during India’s #MeToo movement.

Despite these controversies, Nana Patekar’s legacy in Hindi and Marathi cinema remains influential. His distinctive acting style and dedication to varied roles have left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, inspiring future generations of performers and securing his place as one of the country’s most unique actors.
