Russia Defends India’s Trade Sovereignty Against US Pressure

Date:

In a strong show of support for India, the Kremlin has publicly defended New Delhi’s trade policies, stating that “sovereign countries” must have the autonomy to choose their trading partners. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threats “illegal” and “unacceptable.” Trump had taken to social media to accuse India of profiting from the resale of Russian oil and threatened to “substantially” increase tariffs on Indian products, adding to the 25% tariff already in place since August 1.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also pushed back forcefully. In a statement, the government declared the targeting of India “unjustified and unreasonable” and reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding its “national interests and economic security.”
This diplomatic fallout underscores a broader geopolitical struggle over global energy trade and alliances. While Russia positions itself as a champion of national sovereignty, the U.S. is using economic pressure to enforce its foreign policy objectives. The situation highlights a growing divide, with Russia aligning with India against the United States.
The conflict reveals the deep complexities of global commerce and politics. India’s decision to continue trading with Russia, despite Western pressure, is driven by its need for affordable energy and its commitment to economic stability. The Kremlin’s vocal support not only strengthens its ties with India but also serves as a direct challenge to the U.S.’s attempts to isolate Russia on the world stage.
