iPhone 17 Air: A New Ultra-Slim Model Prioritizing Design Over Pro Features

Date:

Apple is reportedly introducing a new “Air” moniker to its iPhone lineup with the upcoming iPhone 17 series, with the iPhone 17 Air expected to replace the ‘Plus’ models. This new addition has sparked speculation about its positioning within the product hierarchy. While initial thoughts might lean towards a premium-tier device, emerging information suggests the iPhone 17 Air will prioritize a sleek design over the advanced specifications typically found in ‘Pro’ models.
Contrary to being a ‘Pro’ replacement, the iPhone 17 Air is anticipated to feature a single-camera setup and the standard Apple A19 chipset, differentiating it from the more versatile Pro models that are expected to receive the A19 Pro. The display is another area where it will likely differ; while rumored to be between 6.3 and 6.5 inches with a 120Hz refresh rate, it may not incorporate LTPO technology or the ProMotion feature found in Pro iPhones, meaning it won’t be able to scale down to 1Hz.
In terms of core performance, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to share similarities with the standard iPhone 17, both likely featuring the A19 3nm chipset and potentially 12GB of RAM across all iPhone 17 models. However, a notable distinction lies in the camera setup: while the standard iPhone 17 is expected to sport a dual-camera system, leaked renders of the iPhone 17 Air suggest a single camera.
Where the iPhone 17 Air is truly expected to shine is its form factor. Industry insiders, including Ming-Chi Kuo, predict it will be the slimmest iPhone to date, potentially measuring under 6mm thick (around 5.8mm). This focus on an ultra-thin design suggests Apple might be aiming for a device that appeals to users who prioritize aesthetics and portability. All iPhone 17 models, including the Pro variants, are expected to utilize aluminum and glass construction this year, moving away from titanium, which will bring some material commonality across the series. More details are expected to emerge in September 2025, revealing Apple’s strategy for this design-centric iPhone.
