Trump Puts Kibosh on Israeli West Bank Annexation Plan

Date:

Donald Trump has put the kibosh on any Israeli plan to annex the West Bank, stating in no uncertain terms that he “will not allow it.” This decisive intervention from the US president disrupts the political agenda within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition and aligns Washington with the broad international opposition to such a unilateral action.
The announcement creates a politically charged atmosphere for Netanyahu’s visit to the UN in New York. The Israeli leader, who depends on the support of ultra-nationalist parties, must now contend with a public rebuke from his closest ally on an issue of paramount importance to his government’s stability.
This policy clarification follows a period of intense diplomatic activity. European allies had expressed deep concern that Trump would recognize Israeli settlements to punish them for recognizing a Palestinian state. Their lobbying, along with direct warnings from Arab leaders about the “grave consequences” of annexation, played a crucial role in shaping the US position.
The West Bank itself remains a flashpoint, with 700,000 Israeli settlers living on land captured in 1967. The expansion of these settlements, including the recent approval of the controversial E1 plan, is widely condemned as a violation of international law that undermines the prospects for a two-state solution.
This development unfolds as the US is also focused on mediating an end to the Gaza war. A 21-point peace proposal is being discussed with regional actors like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt. Trump expressed hope for a breakthrough, citing productive conversations aimed at freeing hostages and establishing a lasting peace to resolve the devastating, nearly two-year-long conflict.
